EC Plans Border Control Satellite Tracking System

By | December 14, 2011
[Satellite TODAY 12-14-11] The European Commission (EC) unveiled plans Dec. 12 to establish a cross-border surveillance and satellite tracking system, which will aim to allow border guards to share information and intelligence.
The proposed European Border Surveillance System (EUROSUR) will provide border agents with capability to track small boats used in smuggling operations via satellite imagery.
Under the EUROSUR tracking system, authorities responsible for border surveillance, such as border guards, coast guards, police, customs and navies, will be able to exchange operational information and cooperate with each other and with other non-EU countries, EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström said in a statement.
“EUROSUR tracking system will help detect and fight criminal networks’ activities and will be a crucial tool for saving migrants who put their lives at risk trying to reach EU shores.”
