ViaSat U.K. Introduces New Enterprise, Military Broadband Services

[Satellite TODAY 11-24-11] ViaSat U.K. has unveiled a new SurfBeam communications services offering that includes satellite broadband for businesses and government departments, the company confirmed Nov. 23.
   The company said its SurfBeam service would provide a range of connectivity speed options and include packages tailored for both fixed and mobile users. SurfBeam services start at 6 Megabits-per-second (Mbs) downlink and 1 Mbs uplink, and top off at 20 Mbs downlink and 10 Mbs uplink.
   ViaSat U.K. is selling these services via Eutelsat’s Ka-Sat satellite, targeting the business customers from outlying regions of cities. The company also announced real-time tracking and situational awareness services aimed at government and military clients, including applications for smartphones that securely encrypt all communications.
   ViaSat U.K., formerly Stonewood, specializes in encrypted hard drives and other storage devices. U.S.-based satellite service provider ViaSat acquired the company in 2010.
