Blue Origin is Building a Space Logistics Vehicle Called Blue Ring

Blue Origin is building a space logistics vehicle called Blue Ring, the company announced Monday. The spacecraft is designed to provide in-space services including  hosting, transportation, refueling, data relay, and logistics, including an “in-space” cloud computing capability.

The company also announced a new business unit called In-Space Systems, which the Blue Ring is part of. 

Blue Origin did not share how far along the product’s development is or a target launch date, but said it will be able to host payloads of more than 3,000 kg and support commercial and government customers with a variety of missions from Medium-Earth Orbit, to the cislunar region and beyond.

“Blue Ring addresses two of the most difficult challenges in spaceflight today: growing space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit,” said Paul Ebertz, senior vice president of Blue Origin’s In-Space Systems. “We’re offering our customers the ability to easily access and maneuver through a variety of orbits cost-effectively while having access to critical data to ensure a successful mission.” 

Blue Origin joins a number of companies that are pursuing in-space mobility vehicles for a variety of use cases and orbits, including Impulse Space, Momentus, and Exolaunch.
