Lynk Global has started initial satellite-to-cell service in Palau, an island nation in Oceania with mobile network operator PNCC. This  is the first MNO in the world to launch Lynk’s satellite-to-cell technology as a service for its subscribers.

Service will begin with periodic SMS texts, Lynk said in a June 21 announcement. It will start as a beta service in the Southwest Islands and then extend to include all remote areas, and Palau’s Maritime Economic Zone. Lynk said it will also be used to provide back-up services if a natural disaster knocks out the ground network.

“Our partnership with Lynk signals a new era of connectivity for Palau. It’s not just about advanced technology; it’s about bringing people together, connecting our remote islands and increasing resilience for the entire nation. We are committed to ensuring that every person in Palau has access to world-class telecommunications services, no matter where they are,” said PNCC CEO Simon Fraser.

Lynk has three commercial satellites in space. The satellite is equipped with a cell tower software’s stack, and functions like a roaming service for partner MNOs.
