[Satellite Today 10-08-08] Globalstar Inc. has launched a satellite-based remote automated utility meter reading interface (MRI) solution designed to communicate with meters located in areas not served by the traditional public landline telephone system, the company announced Oct. 8.
Globalstar designed the MRI after being approached by a number of the electrical utilities in the United States to provide a remote communications solution. “Utility companies have been looking for cost-effective ways to command and gather data from their meters located in remote or hard to access areas,” Globalstar spokesman Dennis Allen said in a statement.
The Globalstar MRI module is available in the United States, and Canadian availability is expected shortly. The product is expected to be launched in other countries later this year.
