[Satellite TODAY 07-19-12] The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded a contract to Italian space company e-GEOS to process satellite data from the Matera Space Center and to support the operational activities of the Sentinel constellation’s first two satellites, e-GEOS announced July 18.

The seven-year, 10 million euro ($12.2 million) contract includes the provision of acquisition services, X-band installation activities and operation of the Payload Data Ground Segment (PDGS), allowing the receipt, processing and archiving of data acquired from the Sentinel satellites.
The European Union will use the processed data from the two Sentinel satellites for its Earth observation space program Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES).
