Satelites Mexicanos (Satmex) will launch operations on its new, fully funded Satmex 8 satellite beginning in the third quarter of 2012, the Mexican operator announced Dec. 7.

Satmex 8 is currently under construction by Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) and will be based on the manufacturer’s 1300E platform. Once launched, the satellite will be placed in the 116.8 degrees West orbital slot, from which its 64 C- and Ku-band transponders will provide service covering the Americas.
SS/L confirmed that the satellite’s construction is progressing on schedule and is ready to enter into the test phase of the program.
“All of us at Satmex are very pleased to share this new phase of growth and development with our clients, celebrating a strong start with the launch of Satmex 8 and anticipating many more exciting ventures. The new satellite affords us the opportunity to offer new capacities, excellent coverage and high power levels that will translate into competitive advantages and significant efficiencies for all of our clients,” Satmex Vice President of Sales Javier Recio said in a statement.
Satmex recently emerged from bankruptcy protection and completed its financial reorganization in May 2011.
