The European Space Agency (ESA) extended the Envisat Earth-scanning satellite mission to 2013, ESA announced.

That satellite beams down data it has gathered since its launch in 2002.

Envisat, short for environmental satellite, has 10 instruments collectuing data about the atmosphere, land, sea and ice, providing scientists with the most detailed picture yet of the state of the planet, according to ESA.
