ITU Secretary General Sets Ambitious Connectivity Agenda
[Satellite Today – 06-03-08] Hamadoun Touré, secretary general of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), said the organization can beat forecasts about having every school and hospital around the globe connected, with satellite technology playing a key role in making this ambition a reality.
“The ITU’s mandate is to connect the world,” he said at the GTM (Global Telecommunications Meeting) in Washington June 3. “We need to have connectivity in every school and every hospital by 2015. We now want to do this by 2012. We want to make that connection affordable so this basic human right is available today to everyone. Our challenge is not only to bring communications everywhere but we want to bring full broadband everywhere.”
