The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) is in the process of acquiring satellite tracking equipment and two-way radio communication equipment worth $2.5 million to enhance safety on the country’s railway network.

According to published reports in Africa, Mike Karakadzai, the railroad’s general manager, said it was in the process of acquiring satellite tracking equipment and ultra-high frequency (UHF) two-way communication radios to improve the railroad’s communication system.

The project was part of a plan to install a vandal-proof signal system on the parastatal rail line. The northern Bulawayo-Victoria Falls stretch would be given priority as the busiest segment of the 1,900-mile railway.
