British Telecom (BT) has announced plans to move its satellite communications business from Goonhilly, England, marking the end of operations for the world’s largest satellite Earth station.

Despite its 61 dishes, it is no longer “commercially viable” for BT to operate two satellite Earth stations, a BT spokesman was quoted in Sept. 15 British reports. All of Goonhilly’s satellite communications will be routed through its other station at Madley, England, within two years.

In February, BT announced it was dismantling Antenna 2 — Goonhilly’s second operational dish when the 960-ton structure was built in 1968 — because it had reached the “end of its operational life.” The oldest dish, Arthur, was built in 1962 to track the Telstar satellite and received the first transatlantic TV broadcasts from the United States.
