The Indian Air Force is outfitting a fleet of disaster-management vehicles with Inmarsat communications, the company announced Sept. 13.

Two vehicles kitted with Inmarsat terminals already have seen use in emergency situations, including the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami at the end of 2004. The vehicles may be flown in by transport aircraft or helicopter, then used to help coordinate relief efforts.

Group captain S.C. Luthra, of the Indian Air Force’s communications center, said the air force plans to equip all seven of its command centers with the outfitted vehicles.
