Improved Satellite Broadband On British Trains
Ofcom, the British telecoms regulator, announced Sept. 13 a new type of spectrum license it will make available to allow for broadband access on trains via a satellite link.
As some train operators already offer Wi-Fi access delivered through terminals located along tracks, the new license would enable such companies to install on-board satellite earth stations to provide faster, more reliable broadband access. Hot spots aboard trains would allow direct service to laptops or handheld devices from an on-board transmitter, enabling riders to download content and potentially use of Voice over Internet Protocol.
Available on demand under Dotcom’s rules, the new license is for use of the 14 to 14.25 gigahertz band already used by ships and aircraft. Trials have been carried out in a number of European countries, with more planned.
