Qinetiq has signed a licensing deal to market its auto-aligning satellite antenna through Andrew Corp. The Qinetiq design fully automates the set-up and alignment of the dish at any location.

Designed to provide data network and Internet connections of up to 2Mbps for temporarily stationary mobile users, the robust 1.2-meter diameter reflector automatically erects itself, acquires and locks onto an appropriate satellite signal. Users operating in a remote location can effortlessly access their company’s data networks via the high-speed datalink. A lower-cost specification unit based on a 90-cm diameter reflector can similarly be supported using a common mount to meet requirements for broader consumer applications.

Typical initial customers will include oil and gas, energy/utility services, highways, exploration or construction sectors, or those needing to regularly relocate an operational site.

Under the agreement, Andrew will manufacture and develop the physical design of the units while Qinetiq will modify, enhance and license the electronics and software elements.
