Boeing Co. placed a satellite into orbit July 27 for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office, the first mission for the company’s Delta 4 launch vehicle to originate from the U.S. West Coast, Boeing announced.

The Delta 4, developed under the U.S. Air Force’s Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle program, lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., at 11:33 p.m. EDT, and the NROL- 22 satellite was deployed about 54 minutes later, Boeing said.

The next Delta 4 launch from Vandenberg, carrying the Air Force Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, DMSP-17, is scheduled to take place before the end of the year.
