EADS Astrium signed a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop and build the satellite for the Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics (Gaia) mission, EADS announced May 11. The contract is valued at 317 million euros ($400.1 million). The spacecraft, scheduled for launch in 2011, will create a 3-D map of the galaxy by mapping and recording more than a billion stars throughout a five-year period.
