The Astro-F satellite, launched Feb. 22 aboard an M-5 rocket, is in stable condition despite a slight problem with the 2-dimensional solar sensor, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) announced.

Telemetry data collected by ground stations found that Astro-F’s solar pointing was off due to an unknown problem with the solar sensor. The spacecraft’s attitude control was shifted to the earth sensor and gyroscope in order to point the solar panels toward the sun while JAXA investigates the problem. The agency does not expect any interruptions in scheduled operations.

The satellite, which will be renamed Akari, meaning light in Japanese, is designed to observe the sky in the infrared spectrum in order to study the formation and evolution of the universe. The satellite was manufactured in cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA) and scientists across Europe.
