According to a Jan. 10 report on Kyodo News, Japan will begin research efforts aimed at scaling down the size of its spy satellites beginning in fiscal year 2005, with a target launch date of these fourth generation spy satellites in 2010. Researchers will be looking to trim about .8 tons from the current 2-ton model that was launched into orbit in fiscal year 2002, which will enable the satellite to turn and gather satellite imagery faster. The report also said the Japanese government is seeking to improve its photo- taking capabilities of North Korean nuclear facilities.
