Congress Reauthorizes Satellite Transmission Measure

By Staff Writer | November 22, 2004

In a rare Saturday session, Congress passed the Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act of 2004, allowing direct-to-home (DTH) satellite television providers to continue to retransmit broadcasters’ television signals for another five years. However, the bill calls for DTH providers, namely EchoStar Communications Corp. [DISH], to eliminate its two-dish solution and to provide all channels on a single dish for subscribers. The bill sets a 18-month deadline for transitioning customers to a single-dish solution.
