GPS-Galileo Compatibility Pact
At press time, Satellite News confirmed that, after four years of contentious negotiations, an agreement on GPS-Galileo cooperation has been reached between U.S. and European government officials. The Europeans plan to build the Galileo constellation of navigation satellites to provide similar services to those now offered by the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS). The pact would aid U.S. and NATO security by allowing their pursuit of navigation warfare in localized areas of conflict without the risk of interference from Galileo’s signals. To that end, Galileo would be technically compatible with GPS to prevent interference between the navigation services. In addition, private-sector users around the world would have access to a common signal, once the next-generation GPS satellites are deployed.
