The strategic alliance forged between Hughes Electronics [NYSE: GMH] and America Online in 1999 has been terminated, Hughes reported in a document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The break-up will allow Hughes to avoid spending up to $1 billion in additional sales, marketing and development efforts to support joint products and services, company officials said. The canceled agreement also will cause Hughes to take a pre-tax charge on its financial statements for 2002.
