Hughes Network Systems (HNS) has signed a contract with AmazonTech to provide a comprehensive satellitesolution for the SIVAM (System for the Vigilance of the Amazon) program.

AmazonTech will deploy the Hughes Electronics [NYSE: GMH] subsidiary’s HNS’ DW1000 series broadband satellite terminals along with HNS’ PES5000 VSATs (very small aperture terminals) to expand its satellite network for SIVAM. The Brazilian government established the SIVAM communication infrastructure to collect data from satellite, aerial sensing and surveillance, fixed and mobile radar, radio-localization, meteorological stations and altitude weather balloons. The data collected helps detect environmental changes in the Amazon Basin, such as deforestation and illegal airstrips.
