Telespazio, Telecom Italia’s satellite communications business unit, has announced the launch of a new multimedia platform for broadband satellite services. Evolv-e is a DVB-IP multimedia platform encompassing services including distance learning, video conferencing, interactive business TV, IP multicasting and distribution of high-speed multimedia content. A Pentium-enabled computer, a standard satellite TV dish and a small transmission device will be all the equipment that is required to access the new platform. Evolv-e is a so-called ‘intelligent’ system, capable of compressing and decompressing audio, video and data content originating from various sources (clients, content providers and Internet) both on digital or analogue support and transmitting them at high speeds directly to end users as multimedia services.
