[Satellite TODAY 06-21-13] More opportunities for satellite broadband services are beginning to emerge as the demand for Internet access continues to grow around the world, according to Stephane Palomba regional vice president Asia at Gilat Satellite Networks.
"We see the opportunities for satellite based broadband growing and expect they will continue to grow as new HTS [high throughput satellites] are launched,” Palomba said during an exclusive interview with SatelliteTODAY.com, adding that he expects to see the availability of more capacity too. "We expect the capacity to come from multi-mission Ka / Ku / C payloads reducing the financial risk for operators. We believe that the price of Mbps will be more competitive than ever and that there will be more flexible solutions for deploying capacity," he said.
More flexible solutions could mean less expensive entry prices for HUBs and VSATs, according to Palomba. "Organizations can start [at a] smaller scale, as illustrated by our new SkyEdge II-c platform, which we launched at CommunicAsia for the Asian market," he said.
Gilat and Thaicom recently announced a partnership to provide customers across the Asia-Pacific region with an integrated solution using Gilat’s satellite ground equipment in conjunction with Thaicom 4 (Ipstar)’s high throughput satellite. The agreement allows technology equipment vendors to access Thaicom 4 and provide their customers with additional service choices.
"The Asia-Pacific region is a significantly growing market for Gilat," said Erez Antebi, CEO Gilat.
"The increased cooperation will serve to bring our customers an even more attractive broadband satellite-based solution that combines our SkyEdge II-c platform and the Ipstar satellite capacity," Antebi added.
Palomba said Gilat has seen a continued demand for its SkyEdge II platform of HUBs and VSATs, especially "in areas such eGovernment and networks for schools and distance learning, where governments are implementing programs to bridge the digital divide," he said.
But the demand doesn’t stop there. According to Palomba, Gilat is also seeing increased demand for ATM banking and retail networks, cellular and in the energy sector.
"We see growing interest in our Wavestream BUCs and amplifiers and our RaySat low-profile antennas for satellite-on-the-move and satellite-on-the-pause systems and the market for satellite communications in Unmanned Airborne Systems (UAS)," he added.

In order to meet the needs of customers, Palomba said Gilat is looking at HTS to bring more capacity to the region and enable service providers and ISPs to offer their customers faster speeds with reduced costs.
"The increased cooperation that we have [created] with Thaicom will serve to bring our customers an even more attractive broadband satellite-based solution," he said.
Gilat’s outreach spans well beyond the Asia Pacific region. "We are optimistic about our growth prospects for the Asia Pacific region, as we are about our continued growth prospects in other regions such as Latin America, where we have succeeded to build a market leading presence," he said.
Palomba also said Gilat is working closely together on the NBNCO project in Australia where Gilat is already offering customers up to 12 Mbps downstream, on a Ku-band network.
"The network utilizes both Optus and Ipstar capacity across 11 beams, served from 3 earth stations with integrated network management. Over 30,000 installations have already been completed in this very successful project," he said.
Although 2013 is already half way through, Gilat has aggressive plans for the remainder of the year.
"Legendary football coach, Vince Lombardi, once said hope is not a strategy. Gilat will continue with its stated strategy to provide quality products and solutions for the consumer, enterprise and defense markets. We will focus on solutions for high throughput satellites offering our customers’ higher speeds, easier management, scalability and user experience. We will also continue to provide enabling services, as required, for HUB operations, turnkey projects, localization and customization, with flexible business models. Finally, we will continue to strengthen our relationships with our customers and partners throughout the region," Palomba added.
