What a difference a year makes! When Simon Bull, Comsys’ senior consultant made his opening presentation last year, he spoke of VSAT players “doing well if they stood still." This year, there was no such downplaying of the industry’s prospects. Bull was optimistic, stating that there was a "change was in the air” that created a VSAT business environment loaded with potential and opportunity. Terms such as “revolution” were commonly used on the first full day of VSAT 2012.
It all goes to show just how quickly things can change in our industry. The maritime and oil and gas verticals need higher quality communications and the video services and VSAT industries are stepping into the breach. There seems to be a new energy, a new drive about the VSAT market this year. The enterprise market seems to be opening up on a number of levels and with a number of new high-powered satellites now launched, serving these bandwidth hungry business verticals is providing many an opportunity for operators and technology vendors alike. The mood is positive and the satellite industry sees potential to drive some strong revenue returns. All in all, it has been a great start to the event.
