[Satellite TODAY 07-10-12] International Launch Services (ILS) has successfully launched SES’ telecoms satellite SES-5 into orbit onboard a Russian Proton-M rocket from the Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan after a series of delays, the Russian Federal Space Agency Roscosmos confirmed July 9.

“The launch occurred at the calculated time. The separation of the spacecraft from the Briz-M upper-stage rocket is expected at 7:50 a.m. Moscow time on July 10,” Roscosmos said in a statement.
The launch was initially scheduled for June 19, but was postponed after a fault in the rocket’s steering gear was detected during preparation for the launch.
Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) built SES-5 for SES, which will use the satellite to provide various services to customers in Africa, Middle East and Europe during a life span of 15 years.
