[Satellite TODAY 07-09-12] Greek satellite operator HellasSat has reached an agreement with the government of Cyprus to acquire rights to the 39 degrees East orbital slot for an additional 20 years beyond the nominal life of the HellasSat 2 spacecraft currently in that position, the company announced July 6.
The deal could help the operator find a buyer for the satellite, which is managed by the HellasSat Consortium of Athens and controlled by Greek’s national telecoms provider OTE.
HellasSat 2 was launched in 2003, offering 30 Ku-band transponders to regional customers. HellasSat claims the satellite is 96 percent full.
