[Satellite TODAY Insider 01-25-12] NovelSat has conducted independent live testing of its NS3 3G-Sat modulation technology to confirm that broadcasting data via satellite can be accomplished at the same cost of fiber, the company announced Jan. 24.

The testing was conducted in collaboration with satellite operator SES and U.K. data services provider Satellite Mediaport Services (SMS). NovelSat said its team ran tests over three different SES satellites – NSS-703, NSS-5 and NSS-10.
NS3 inclined orbit satellite tests were administered over NSS-703 to show a 61 percent data rate increase on a 72 MHz transponder. The NSS-5 power limited satellite tests showed up to 49 percent higher data rate over its current satellite space segment utilization. “Our NS3-enabled NS1000 modulator and NS2000 demodulator allowed the SMS teleport to move into a higher constellation than it was capable of while using top-of-the-line DVB-S2 devices,” NovelSat said in a company statement.
The company added that the NSS-10 satellite saw similar results as NSS-5 when NS3 devices were enabled. “NS3 again allowed the teleport to move to a higher constellation and provide up to 55 percent higher data rate over current satellite space segment utilization, which uses top-of-the-line DVB-S2 devices,” NovelSat said.
SES Vice President of Sales for Europe and Central Asia Simon Gatty-Saunt endorsed Novelsat’s NS3 technology and said that the operator is searching for innovations to enhance its level of service. “Novelsat’s NS3 satellite modulation technology definitively falls into that [service enhancement] category by bringing fiber level costs to satellite broadcasting for the first time, while retaining the inherent value of satellite communications,” Gatty-Saunt said in a statement.
SMS Founder and CEO Zvi Golod also praised the NS3 modulation solution’s performance during testing. “For our customers this is a dream come true. For the first time in our industry we are able to offer data services over satellite for a lower rate than fiber, which will revolutionize communication cost from Europe to emerging markets.” said Mr. Golod, CEO and founder of Satellite Mediaport Services.
