[Satellite TODAY 06-13-11] Inmarsat and its technology partner Thrane & Thrane completed trials of Inmarsat’s IPv6 services across the BGAN network, the MSS operator announced June 10.
Thrane & Thrane used its Explorer 500 land mobile terminal during the trial, establishing an IPv6 connection from Windows- and Apple-based computers via Inmarsat’s BGAN network to the public IPv6 Internet. The connection was then used for Web browsing.
Inmarsat also has completed an initial study on the feasibility of supporting IPv6 services across the BGAN network, which delivers mobile broadband services for use on land, at sea and in the air. The European Space Agency and the United Kingdom’s Technology Strategy Board supported the study.
“We see an increasing interest in IPv6 from government organizations. These tests illustrate that the Explorer series is already prepared to support our key customers’ future requirements,” Thrane & Thrane Land Mobile Vice President Henrik Noerrelykke said in a statement.
