[Satellite TODAY 04-26-11] Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) has delivered the Telstar 14R/Estrela do Sul 2 satellite to the Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan ahead of schedule, the manufacturer announced April 25.
The satellite, designed and built for Telesat, will be launched in late May aboard an International Launch Services (ILS) Proton Breeze M vehicle and positioned at the 63 degrees West longitude orbital slot. The Ku-band satellite aims to deliver services to markets in Brazil, the continental United States, the North Atlantic Ocean Region and the Andean and Southern Cone region of South America.
In a statement, Telesat President and CEO Dan Goldberg said he was impressed that the satellite was completed in less than two years’ time. "When our newest satellite goes into service this summer, it will provide significant benefits to our current and prospective customers, including roughly double the capacity of the satellite it replaces as well as significantly improved geographic coverage and higher power," Goldberg said.
