[Satellite TODAY 08-19-09] Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) delivered the Nimiq 5 communications satellite to International Launch Service’s (ILS) Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan, where it will be launched on Sept. 18, SS/L announced Aug. 18.
    SS/L built the Nimiq 5 satellite for Telesat. The operator will use the satellite to provide a variety of high-definition and specialty direct-to-home television services in North America.
    Nimiq 5, based on the Space Systems/Loral 1300 platform, is a direct broadcast satellite equipped with 32 high-power Ku-band transponders.
