[Satellite TODAY 08-12-09] International Launch Services (ILS) has successfully launched the AsiaSat 5 satellite for AsiaSat, ILS announced Aug. 12.
    The Proton rocket carrying the spacecraft lifted of at 3:47 a.m. local Hong Kong time from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazahkstan.
    AsiaSat 5, based on a Space Systems/Loral’s 1300 satellite bus, will replace AsiaSat 2 at the 100.5 degrees East orbital position. The satellite’s mission is to provide advanced satellite services, including television broadcast, telephone networks and VSAT networks for broadband multimedia services across Asia.
