[Satellite TODAY 09-14-12] United Launch Alliance (ULA) has successfully launched a classified satellite for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) on an Atlas 5 rocket from the central California coast, ULA announced Sept. 14.

The mission was described only as being in support of U.S. national defenses. The launch – NRO’s fourth of the year – was delayed six weeks due to launch range equipment problems.
The Atlas 5 rocket’s excess capacity was used to boost 11 tiny Cubesats for other customers, as well. The small satellites will conduct research on subjects ranging from space weather to tracking maritime shipping containers.
