[Satellite TODAY Insider 02-07-11] SES World Skies signed a capacity deal with Buenos Aires-based service provider TIBA to distribute its channels across the Latin American region, SES announced Feb. 4.
TIBA has agreed to extend its use of more than five transponders aboard SES World Skies’ SES-6 satellite for the entire life of the spacecraft through 2030. TIBA will use the capacity to deliver premium, brand-name television programming to thousands of cable operators serving more than 30 million households throughout the entire region.
“Our long-term agreement for significant SES-6 capacity solidifies our ability to continuously deliver on the escalating consumer demand for new channels and HD content throughout Latin America. Our relationship with SES World Skies provides the stability, flexibility and reliability TIBA must have to ensure we meet the distribution needs of worldwide tier-one broadcasters in cable television markets across the region,” TIBA CEO Norberto Alvarez Vitale said in a statement.
SES-6 is scheduled to replace NSS-806 when it’s launched in early 2013, providing more capacity in the coveted 319.5 degrees East orbital slot.
SES World Skies has kicked off the year with a number of new capacity contacts. In late January, the company announced its government solutions arm had received an order under the U.S. Government’s new $5 billion Future Commercial Satcom Acquisition (FCSA) program to provide C-band capacity to Artel for support of government initiatives. The contract includes two 36 MHz C-band transponders on an SES satellite covering the North American region and represents the first FCSA contract for the global satellite operator.
