Globalstar announced June 6 it received temporary operating authority from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for its North American satellite ground gateway in Wasilla, Alaska.

The gateway, the sixth to receive such authority, will become operational June 30 to provide ground-based public telephone and data networks access to the company’s voice and data customers in most of Alaska, Northwestern British Columbia, the Yukon as well as the Bering Sea and Northern Pacific maritime region.

The FCC temporary access was granted to allow Globalstar to operate the gateway while the company’s application to operate the facility permanently is being processed. Globalstar has offered satellite coverage in the region since 2000.
