European satellite operator SES will utilize Elveo Mobile’s D2D technology to enable mobile roaming capabilities for European consumers, businesses, governments, institutional, and defense users under the terms of a partnership expansion the two companies signed on Tuesday.
SES and Elveo Mobile will also collaborate to establish Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) D2D satellite manufacturing capabilities in Europe using Elveo’s patented D2D satellite bus, payload and software technology stack.
“European consumers, commercial, and government users deserve resilient, secure, multi-orbit connectivity, and SES is preparing to deliver that next layer of communications in combination with Elveo’s direct-to-device services,” SES CEO Adel Al-Saleh said in the announcement. “Working with our partner Elveo will help bring critical D2D services to European customers on the timeline they demand.”
Elveo Mobile is the result of a merge between former D2D competitors Lynk and OmniSpace, completed in August. SES backed the merge as a major investor, establishing the basis of its strategic partnership with the newly formed Elveo. The ultimate goal is to combine Elveo’s LEO D2D satellites with SES’ existing fleet in GEO and MEO to form a unique multi-orbit architecture offering.
This comes after Elveo also announced plans this week to work with Apex Space in the U.S. to help Elveo establish vertically integrated production and scale its supply chain.
