Lithuania and Luxembourg Strengthen Space Defense Ties

Defense officials from Lithuania and Luxembourg sign a Letter of Intent (LoI) enabling co-operation on satellite and space capabilities

Lithuania and Luxembourg are looking to forge closer ties in the area of space defense after a successful meeting between Lithuania’s Minister of National Defense Robertas Kaunas and Luxembourg’s Minister of Defense, Yuriko Backes. The countries have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) that paves the way for co-operation on satellite communications and other space capabilities. Ministers also discussed the possibilities to avail of the future EU space investments to strengthen security and defense capabilities of the countries. Lithuania’s Ministry of National Defense revealed details of the meeting, June 10.

Lithuania has a population of around 2.9 million people. Luxembourg has a population of less than 700,000 people.

The talks focused on strengthening NATO deterrence and defense and initiatives for strengthening European security. Significant attention was also dedicated to cooperation in space. Ministers discussed the growing impact of space technology on security and defense.

“Russia’s in Ukraine has demonstrated how satellite communications and other space technology has become an inseparable part on modern military operations.  We value Luxembourg’s leadership in the space sector and the opportunity to develop the capabilities which will contribute to an improved efficiency and resilience of the Lithuanian Armed Forces,” Robertas Kaunas, Lithuania’s Minister of National Defense, said in a statement.
