[Satellite TODAY 08-20-09] Harris Corp. signed a multi-year contract with cruise ship operator Carnival Corp. to provide high-speed Internet and advanced voice and data services to its cruise ship passengers, Harris announced Aug. 19.
The new managed services agreement initially covers the provision of satellite bandwidth, a modern all-IP network and operational support of onboard equipment, including dual C- and Ku-band antennas to Carnival vessels under the Costa Cruises brand, a tourism group in Italy that operates 14 cruise ships.
“Today’s cruise ship passengers and crew expect to access the same communications services onboard a ship as they do when they are on land. Costa is at the cutting edge when it comes to communications technology, and these upgrades will provide continued excellent service and assured communications for their fleet,” Rick Simonian, president of Harris Maritime Communications Services, said in a statement.
The deal leaves the option open for Carnival to contract Harris to provide services to its other fleets. Financial details were not disclosed.
