Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Co. unveiled its second-generation handheld phones.

The SO-2510, weighing 130 grams, is a satellite-only version designed for mobile connectivity in areas beyond terrestrial networks and features GPS, a high-resolution color screen, enhanced memory, polyphonic ringtones, USB connectivity and multi-language support. The handset offers voice, data, fax and short-messaging services.

The SG-2520 smart phone, weighing 180 grams, is touted as the only satellite tri-band phone to provide connectivity on GSM mode in all five continents. It has all the features of the SO-2510 plus a built-in camera and advanced streaming media capability.

Thuraya, based in the United Arab Emirates, sold 10,000 of the phones in September in a limited release and said it expects to sell 90,000 SO-2510 units in 12 to 15 months. The SG-2520 will be commercially available later this year, and Thuraya expects to sell 70,000 units within 12 months.

“The high demand for the new handsets will create a renewed market momentum for us,” Thuraya CEO Yousuf Al Sayed, said in a statement.

The phones are manufactured by South Korea-based APSI, partly owned by Thuraya.
