XM Adds Oprah To Lineup
XM Satellite Radio signed an three-year, $55 million agreement to carry content provided by Oprah Winfrey’s radio company, XM announced Feb. 9.
Under the agreement with Harpo Radio Inc., XM will launch the “Oprah & Friends,” channel in 2006. The station will broadcast an exclusive weekly radio show with Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King, as well as segments hosted by other personalities on the Oprah Winfrey Show such as Bob Greene, Mehmet Oz, Robin Smith, Marianne Williamson and Nate Berkus.
The channel , which will broadcast from a studio at Harpo Studios in Chicago, also will feature content gleaned from other Winfrey products such as Oprah Magazine.
“Oprah Winfrey is a prolific force in our culture whose unprecedented achievements in television, film, publishing and philanthropy will bring an amazing radio experience to the XM nation of subscribers. Hugh Panero, XM’s president and CEO, said in a statement.
“Today’s announcement with XM marks an exciting new chapter in the evolution of Harpo’s media portfolio,” Tim Bennett, president of Harpo Productions, said. “Oprah & Friends will not only complement our existing television, print, film, cable and online properties but will provide new opportunities to extend our brand to XM’s millions of listeners.”
