Sirius Leverages NFL Deal With New Portable Unit

By Staff Writer | August 17, 2004

Sirius Satellite Radio [SIRI] introduced a portable plug-and-play receiver aimed directly at the National Football League (NFL) enthusiasts among its subscriber base. The new receiver, aptly named the Sportster, is designed with features for NFL followers, including prompts that their favorite team is playing and a listing of all games that are available at any given point in time. Also available are scores of the games in progress. The list of games/scores will extend to all sporting events carried by Sirius.

Given the $250 million Sirius paid to have exclusive rights to the NFL broadcasts, it’s no surprise the company is pushing products targeting that specific audience. However, it remains to be seen whether a focused sports-related receiver will be enough to drive subscriber numbers down the line.
