High-speed, two-way satellite Internet provider StarBand is attempting to boost its subscriber sales by launching a direct sales channel and allow consumers to order service either online or by phone.

The “StarBand direct sales” channel will target a prospective customer base of more than 20 million people in U.S. homes and small offices who cannot receive digital subscriber line (DSL) or cable modem services, company officials said. Potential customers will be able to purchase equipment and satellite Internet services directly from StarBand’s Web site or by using a toll free phone number, 800/4STARBAND, company officials added.

McLean, Va.-based StarBand previously had relied solely on a sales network of 2,500 retailers in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, company officials said. StarBand’S direct channels will improve its access to its target market, said Howard Lossing, StarBand’s sales & marketing vice president.
