Hispasat has contracted with Thales Alenia Space to construct the Amazonas Nexus satellite, which will replace Amazonas 2 in the 61º West orbital position, and expand its capabilities. The Spanish operator plans to put the Amazon Nexus will be put into orbit in the second half of 2022. Thales Alenia Space will be responsible for the design, production, testing, and acceptance tests in orbit.

The Amazon Nexus will feature a Transparent Digital Processor (DTP), designed to increase the geographical flexibility of the device if changes occur in the commercial scenarios initially proposed. Hispasat says the satellite payload will be digitally processed, allowing for the possibility of assigning the required capacities in orbit at any time. The Amazon Nexus will have an estimated life of 15 years, 20 kW of satellite power and a launch mass of 4.5 tons. Hispasat intends for the satellite to cover the entire American continent, the North Atlantic corridor, and Greenland, along with providing services in Ku-band.

“With the Amazon Nexus, Hispasat continues to innovate to give the best answers to the challenges of the satellite market and the needs of its customers through the most advanced technology,” Hispasat CEO Miguel Ángel Panduro said.
