[Satellite TODAY 08-07-12] Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp. has successfully demonstrated an X-band mobile satellite communications system with a phased array antenna at a U.S. Army facility, Ball Aerospace announced Aug. 6.
The Mobile Multifunction Low-Cost Array (MMLCA) system was developed for the U.S. Office of Naval Research to demonstrate high data-rate communications with military and commercial satellite systems. The MMLCA antenna system aims to enable the reduction of the number of antennas necessary for communications while providing better coverage.
“MMLCA is significantly more rugged than competing conventional designs making it more impervious to weather and battlefield operations. Additionally, it incorporates the advantages found in advanced phased array antennas, including a lower profile design for hemispherical coverage, high-reliability and lower total ownership cost,” Ball Aerospace Tactical Solutions Vice President and General Manager Jim Oschmann said in a statement.
