[Satellite TODAY 02-13-12] ViaSat is phasing out the brand of its subsidiary WildBlue and directing resellers to refrain from mentioning or selling the service by name, according to a report confirmed Feb. 10 by Light Reading Cable.
The report said ViaSat is phasing out the service as it plans to transition to the much faster Exede service, which will be provided by the ViaSat-1 Ka-band high-throughput satellite. ViaSat acquired residential satellite broadband service WildBlue in 2009 for $568 million. WildBlue currently serves about 385,000 customers.
ViaSat expects to complete the rollout of the Exede service by March 1, offering up to 12Mbit/s downstream and 3Mbit/s upstream. ViaSat said it would stop selling WildBlue in areas where Exede becomes available. ViaSat has already signed Exede distribution deals with Dish Network and the U.S. National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC).
