[Satellite TODAY 04-22-11] The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a product recall for approximately 15,400 Spot Satellite Communicators manufactured by Globalstar subsidiary Spot LLC, the CPSC announced April 20.
The commission issued the recall after it discovered that the unit’s internal voltage regulator, provided by Spot’s Chinese manufacturer, is prone to malfunction, resulting in the inability to transmit messages and tracking information in emergency situations.
"The satellite communicator tracks the user’s location and sends the user’s GPS coordinates and a distress message in the case of an emergency. The GPS is not subject to this recall. Affected products have Electronic Serial Numbers (ESN) from 0-2000000 to 0-2019999. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product," CPSC said in a statement.
