[Satellite TODAY 03-15-11] Eutelsat Communications broadband subsidiary Skylogic signed an agreement worth more than 5 million euros ($6.9 million) with German company Sat Internet Services to distribute broadband via the Ka-Sat high-throughput satellite, Eutelsat announced March 14.
The three-year broadband utility contract enables Sat Internet Services to market Eutelsat’s next generation Tooway service to German customers. The service will be available when the Ka-Sat satellite is activated in mid-2011.
Eutelsat said the fact that about 770,000 German homes have no broadband access creates a significant market opportunity for satellite broadband in the region. “Despite the rollout of high-speed terrestrial broadband infrastructure, Germany faces the same challenge as other European countries to build an inclusive digital economy for all users and enterprises. We are convinced that the performance of Tooway through Ka-Sat empowers satellite broadband to contribute to achieving this goal.”
