[Satellite TODAY 02-07-11] Hughes Network Systems will provide the ground communications network for Boeing’s Mexsat satellite based network system under a contract signed Feb. 3 between the two companies.
Hughes will install the network at a variety of sites, including: two gateways, satellite base stations, customer care and billing systems, and reference user terminals. The company also will manage final delivery into service.
“We’re employing our well-proven GMR1-3G satellite air interface in the design. This technology will be embedded in a range of reference user terminals we will deliver for maritime, aeronautical, and high-speed vehicular applications, including tracking,” Hughes Mobile Vice President and General Manager Matthew Mohebbi said in a statement.
In December, the Mexican government named Boeing its prime contractor for Mexsat to ensure secure communications for Mexico’s national security needs, as well as enhanced coverage for the country’s civil telecommunications. The contract has a total value of $1 billion.
