[Satellite TODAY 09-24-09] Global Satellite USA has launched the Thuraya XT rugged handset with broadband service on Thuraya‘s satellite network, Global Satellite announced Sept. 23.
The service, aimed ay military and government users, allows GmPRS e-mail capability, SMS text messaging and Web browsing at download speeds of 60 kilobits per second (kbps) and upload speeds of 15 kbps as well as data speeds at 9.6 kbps, from a remote laptop.
Global Satellite CEO Martin Fierstone said the handset is for customers who move around in areas where local networks are unreliable or non-existent and require durable and weather-resistant models.
