[Satellite TODAY 11-08-12] Communications provider NewCom International has partnered with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and a group of other public and private sector organizations in a pilot program to bring 21st century communications to Colombian schools located in the most violent-prone regions, the companies announced Nov. 8.

NewCom is providing the phase one pilot program, which targets 26 schools located in the remote and unstable region of Nudo de Paramillo Region in Northern Colombia, with satellite-based Internet services.
USAID  and the Colombia-based nonprofit Fundesmag are leading the Nudo de Paramillo Satellite Internet Access and Solar Energy for Rural Communities Initiative, designed to bring stability to areas of Colombia that are currently struggling due to their disconnect from local and national governmental entities and their remote location. The initiative aims to deliver schools with solar-generated electricity, computers and satellite-based Internet connectivity, benefiting 4,267 students with the global educational resources and interactive learning from the Internet.
Participating public-private sector organizations also include the public Colombian government-formed agency for advancements in these volatile regions Corantioquia and Columbian turnkey solar energy solutions provider Hybrytec S.A.S.
